Chapter Twenty-Three

Aryc sat on his bed, his mind a dull wasteland of unfocused thoughts. A little over an hour had passed since Styvan had marched from the house in a fury, and each minute felt like an eternity of torture.

Why haven't the Vigilants marched in to take me, or the council, anybody? And why haven't I fled?

Insufficient data.

Aryc scowled. He'd tried to forget about his talkative Aspect and wished above all that the computational engine that shared his brain was a delusion, some fever dream brought on by his recent injuries. But evidence suggested it was real, or Aryc had gone crazy.

Or Styvan is right, and I have been a heretic since I was born.

Incorrect evaluation. Heresy is a crime of action or inaction in the face of heresy. A person cannot be born heretical.

Tell that to the Sovereign gods.

I have no way of contacting the Sovereign gods, so I cannot tell them anything.

A wry chuckle pushed past Aryc's lips, and he bent over, taking his head in his hands and rubbing at his temples. If you're planning on sticking around, you need to get a better handle on sarcasm.

I am always eager to learn. For knowledge is power.

His Aspect was right. Knowledge was power, and at present, Aryc possessed very little. He needed to learn who he was, what was happening to him, and how to stop it. He needed to find this Martyn. But how do I do that, and do I even want to?

So, you're useless, Aryc thought, noting the Aspect's use of Vyctor instead of father.

Not quite, but we'll work on that.

His Aspect said nothing, and Aryc rubbed his head, trying to relieve the pressure building inside him.

"Quit wallowing," Nualla said from the door to his room.

Aryc looked up to see the girl who was no longer his sister leaning on the door jamb. "I'm not sure you're allowed to tell me what to do anymore, now that I'm officially older than you."

"I bossed you around because you were an idiot, not because I was older, and since you're still an idiot, I'll continue bossing you around until you stop being an idiot. Deal?"

"I'm not sure I can abide by such harsh restrictions." As he looked upon her, all of his emotions came to a head, and tears came to his eyes. "Who am I? What am I?"

She rushed to him, kneeling in front of him. "You are my idiot brother, no matter what anyone says, and you always will be. My brother, not an idiot, I hope."

"You have the worst bedside manner."

"But I'll always be there."

And she will. His emotions poured forth. She pulled him into a fierce hug, and he wrapped his arms about her. She held him, and when she finally let go and looked him in the eyes, he felt much better.

"There's something I need to tell you," he said. "About the Challenge." She looked at him with worry, perhaps even a bit of fear, but then she nodded, and he began his tale.
